Host: Everybody wants to make a great first impression. A smile is one of the first things you notice about a person but our daily consumption of cigarettes, coffee, tea and wine, not to mention all the artificial colorings in processed foods may stain our teeth and compromise our grins. The supermarket shelves are full of promises. Brush with us for the brightest and whitest. You can pay double the price for a tube of Goo that claims to eliminate your smile like the aura of the saint but are you really getting what you pay for? The bleach levels are so low and not in contact with your teeth for long enough during a brush to actually make an impact. Emma Copeland: These products came to whiten teeth. Now many of the products we look to actually do, they are likely to remove stains from teeth. These stains like tea, coffee, smoking and so they will go some way to doing that but they won’t actually whiten your teeth. They won’t make your teeth whiten in the natural shade. Host: Dentists are worried that at home overuse of whitening toothpastes may lead to weaken the enamel over time creating wrought and decay. Why? Because it is not the advertised bleach that removes the stains. It is the added levels of abrasive silica in whitening toothpaste that can rub away that protective coating on your teeth. Gordon Watkins: A first point of call must be to go and see a dentist to get them professionally cleaned out by the dentist or a hygienist and to take advice from the dentist about the suitable treatment that would fit their individual needs. Host: With a trip to the dentist, you can have your teeth lightened by up to eight shades in just over 45 minutes. It may be costly but it is pain-free and less damaging to your teeth than years of brushing with harsh abrasives and as the added benefit of getting a checkup and to clean along the way. This process will not only remove your stains, it will literally turn your teeth a brighter shade of white. Even though it is quite expensive, you’ll feel like a million dollars and what’s the bet you leave the surgery with a huge smile on your face. Host: Anyone for tennis? Evolving from a 12th century French past time, where gloves were used instead of rackets, tennis is no longer the pursuit of cloistered monks, but a modern game accessible to anyone whose up for it. If you’re in the mood for a good lob, the chances are there are communal tennis courts in your vicinity. Grab a racket and a partner and you’re on your way. Tennis as we know was probably taking shape by the time Shakespeare was putting pen to paper in the 1600’s, as his King Henry V was the receiver of a fine basket of tennis balls as a jive against his youth and a signal that the game was on. But it wasn’t until 1874, that the world’s first tennis club was founded in England. Tennis is a fantastic way for anyone to keep limber and fit. Even if you don’t aspire to being a grand slammer, burning all 500 calories per hour will have you trimming down and toning up. Be sure to warm up well before a match. Shoulders, elbows and wrists are the most commonly injured body parts in tennis as much due to receiving the full force of the ball as to overuse and repetitive action. A good choice of racket and appropriate string tension will help prevent further injuries. In a fast-paced set, the quadriceps get an intense workout as the player races from side to side and stops hard trying to second guess the opponent. All this quad actions places amazing pressure on the knees so make sure they are well cared for with good shoes and adequate warm-ups. Shoe choice may actually be determined by what kind of surface you are playing on so get your shoes fitted by a professional. In terms of fitness, tennis will definitely make you a winner game, set and match. Bleach-based teeth whitening products may cause sensitivity in some consumers even if they have been prescribed by a dentist.
