Amber Rao: Scotch tape, which is almost a necessity today for so many different purposes. It was invented as a or it was developed as a way to cover insulation batts in the refrigeration plant. And when that didn't work quite well, the scientist Deck Drew figured out of way of coating cellophane with adhesive and then it occurred to him that this might be useful as a tape. And it went along for a while until some salesman in the 3M organization figured out that you need a dispenser, so that you could actually tear the tape and not have to look for the end that's gotten stuck to the roll, which is the one of the most painful things you could ever imagine and that's when it took off. So, I think that's a typical example of an invention, which started here and went over there and then took off with a completely different application.
