Melanie Raposo: Hi everybody! I am Melanie Raposo, and welcome to Mommy's Minute. If you are an asthma sufferer, you may be concerned about how this will affect your unborn child. When controlled carefully, maternal asthma does not pose any risk to your baby. However, uncontrolled asthma can cause some serious dangers to your child. It can increase your chance of premature birth, preeclampsia, and low birth weight baby. This is due to the fact that mothers with uncontrolled asthma have lower levels of oxygen in their blood, which means their babies aren't getting enough oxygen for proper development. In severe cases this can lead to death for both mother and baby. The best way to control your asthma is to take asthma medications, which are perfectly safe to do so during pregnancy. Just be sure to consult your healthcare provider first before taking any medications.
