Learn about Multi Step Equations Applications In this lesson, let's learn how to do word problems that deal with multi-step equations. Here's what the problem says that a martial art school is offering a special where a new student can enroll for half price. So, they pay half price for enrollment after they pay $14.50 application fee. In order for a student to enroll, they have to pay $14.50 plus whatever the price they were supposed to pay, half of that, P/2. This is what they must pay and that’s it. It says 10 students enrolled and the instructor collected a total of $345.00. This is what one student pays. So, 10 students, how much do they pay? 10×$14.50 plus whatever the price of the admission was half of that. 10 students pay $345.00, so that’s our multi-step equation. Let's try and solve it. 10 students paid $14.50 application fee each plus whatever the price was over 2 because they paid half price and the instructor collected $345.00. What do we know? Let's distribute 10 across the board, so 10×14.50 is $145.00+10×P/2=345. So, 145+10/2P is 5P=345. Since we've added 145 to the left, I'm going to subtract 145 from both sides. What do we have? 5P=200. Let's divide both sides by 5, so P=200/5 is 40. So, the regular price of admission is $40.00. What does this mean? What is the regular price of enrollment? $40.00 and the way we did is first we converted the word problem step by step into an equation and then we just solved it.
