You’re on holiday, but that doesn’t mean you have license to be a couch potato. Get out in the sun, sand and surf for the ride of your life. Jet skiing is fun and adventurous and you might just burn a few calories clinging on for dear life. Breathe in the fresh sea air as freestyle your way around the bay. An air trick here, a hood trick there, every muscle will be engage as you race on by. Or if you’re game, take it to extremes free ride style. This is definitely not for the faint hearted as the ski launches off the top of one wave, performs an aerial maneuver and land smoothly to descend surfer’s style down another. These personal watercrafts were invented in the 70’s and became popular with jet setters for the next two decades. But since, jet skis have become more affordable for the ordinary person. Now, there is no excuse not to ride the waves. Be prepared to fall off though. It happens to the best of them. At the end of it all, you would have burned 460 calories per hour, strengthened your core, leg and arm muscles and given your brain an amazing workout as it calculated how to keep you balanced on the slippery craft. Surfs up. The tropics look like a stunning vacation destination on a glossy brochure, but beneath the surface of those aquamarine waves are a few little creatures you should know about before you head out for swim. Jellyfish frequent the beaches in a lot of popular tourist destinations. And in the words of the experts, it pays to know before you go. Bluebottle stingers, box jellyfish and Irukandji don’t mean you any harm as they are the first to take flight when they feel you coming, but their tentacles are so long they are not really in control as to whether they sting you or not. Most tourist destinations have swimming areas enclosed in sting approved nets. Be sure to swim in these but even so, it’s best to done a full body sting approved suit or wear two layers of nylon stocking on your arms and legs. I know what I’d prefer. If someone is stung by and Irukandji or Box Jellyfish, pour two liters of vinegar over the tentacles to deactivate the stingers. The pain and poison will put the victim into severe shock and the heart may stop beating so CPR may have to be administered. Sometimes, Irukandji symptoms take 20 minutes to manifest. You might be far from the beach by that stage so keep vinegar in your bag all holiday. The Jungle to most of us is a faraway mythical place where exotic animals and tribal people dwell. But these magnificent ecosystems hold age old medicinal secrets that could benefit us all in our everyday lives. Deep in the Amazon jungle, shamans reveal the healing power of the ___ tree. Keep your head above water while swimming in the tropics as sting approved suits don’t protect your face.
