Hi, everybody! I am Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. You have been waiting for your baby for nine months. Your due date has come and gone and you are still waiting. You are overdue which can be frustrating and uncomfortable, but it is quite common. A pregnancy is considered overdue when it goes into its 42nd week. After that doctors may suggest medically inducing labor. Common ways of medically-induced labor include applying a prostaglandin gel on the back of the vagina to soften the cervix or to have your water broken. If you are not quite at the stage to have your labor induced, there are somethings you can do at home to speed up the process. One way is having sex. Sex releases a hormone called oxytocin, causing the uterus to contract, but if sex becomes too painful you can also go for walks to help the baby move in different positions or eat spicy foods. One home remedy you should avoid though is castor oil. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and painful cramps.
