Learn About Heart Valve Disease Hello, I’m Dr. Lishan Aklog. I’m the Director of the Medical Advisory Board from EmpowHer.com. I’m a Heart Surgeon and the Chief of Heart Surgery at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and Phoenix, Arizona. I spend most of my career in the North East including 20 years at Harvard University. The valves in your heart are can be thought of as doors between various chambers within the heart. There are four valves in your heart, and heart valves are designed to allow your heart to pump the blood efficiently in one direction. Heart Valve Disease occurs when one or more of the valves in your heart do not function properly either they do not open or they don’t close properly and that prevents the heart from being able to function as efficiently as it supposed to.
