Alex: When I hear the word snack I often think of junk, cookies, cakes and chips. But the right snacks can actually be beneficial to your health and provide you for more various things. I’m Alex Winner here to found out the secret of heart healthy snaking. So let’s go behind the burner and meat the nutritionist. I’m here with nutritionist Martha in today’s all about snacking. Martha what are dealing? Martha: Alright when you hear the word snack Alex a lot of times we think about something that’s not so healthy. Alex: Right. Martha: We think about food that are high in fat and high in sugar then reality with a little planning you can actually have a really healthy snack and something that is good for your heart. So when to my favorite sacks to recommend or nut, they are high in protein, they contain heart healthy fats, vitamin E and other vitamins and minerals. Great snack, the problem is pushing control I think. They are high calories and a lot of people have a hard time with haven’t small portion. So the trick is two calorie portion controlled facts with you. Brings out you recommend would be Emerald Blue Diamond is another brand and you can stick this bag in your pocket bag or your bag and you pushing controlled. Alex: So, how many would you share in a portion? Martha: Good question, a portion of nuts is about an ounce and it’s about 24 almonds is about 24 peanuts, 18 cashews it’s a small handful. Something would fit in the palm of your hand and something like about this and I think that a lot of people eat more than this which is why I’m a fan of this portion control. Alex: Right, you can eat them by the handful. Martha: If you are watching TV with the can of nuts. Alex: Right. Martha: Definitely. Alex: What’s another great snack? Martha: Another great snack would be fruit, we all know fruit is healthy; it’s a great heart healthy snack. It contains soluble fiber, vitamins, minerals and it’s relatively low in calories. The trick is going to be how to remember to take fruit. Alex: Okay. Martha: And not going to blender machine. So you have to plan and bring it with you on your way to the office, keep an apple in your bag. Now, in addition to fresh fruit you can also have dried fruit along specially prunes and apricots they are very high in soluble fiber, very healthy for you. And again, back to pushing control because dried fruits a little bit higher in calories because of the sugar buying pushing control snacks something like this. This is a dried apricots, they also have dried plums, you can stick it in your bag and take it on the go with you, pushing controlled, healthy snack, good for your heart. Alex: So, nuts and fruits are two great snacks. What else can I eat? Martha: Another one of my favorite snacks would be nut butter. It could be an almond butter or a peanut butter I recommend natural nut butter like Barney’s Butter. Again a problem with nut butters could be pushing control. Alex: Okay so how much do you eat? Martha: Okay a portion is about a table spoon, so if you have the discipline to spoon on the tablespoon that’s great. I know I don’t, I love nut butter. Alex: Okay what’s great about this Barney Butter comes in individual 90 calorie packs. Martha: Perfects you will be carry it with your bag, you can take it to works putting on butter apple for snack or crackers I think it’s a great thing. Alex: So, if I’m having a sweet craving what’s a good heart healthy snack? Martha: Now, we come to the fun stuff Alex, if you are anything like me I love chocolate and we all know that dark chocolate has health benefits. Alex: Okay. Martha: Chocolate contains flavonoid which is an antioxidant which can help reduce risks of heart disease in several different ways. So a great snack could be a square of dark chocolate.
