Hi everybody, I am Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. If you are going to see a genetic counselor, it is important to gather as much information on yours and your partner's family medical history as you can. First talk to parents and siblings about any medical problem they may have had. Then find out that grandparents and then uncles and cousin .Some diseases and disorders to look out for are cancer, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and alcoholism. You will also want to take note of the age when the problem occurred and if a family member with a heavy smoker or overweight. It is also important to include the relative's ethnicity as some diseases are more prominent among certain ethnic groups.
