Question: What are some common misconceptions you hear about diabetes? Dr. Jordan Lipton: Well, I think there is a lot of confusion about between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. A lot of people think well you know you are if you are diabetic that means you are fat and you ate too many sweets as a child which of course in the case of Type 1 diabetes is not at all a case it's you know Type 1 diabetes is more of an genetic autoimmune environmental cause, it's not due to obesity and most Type 1 diabetics are not obese when they are diagnosed but even in the case of Type 2 diabetes even though there is a -- I guess a possibly a disconnected cause and effect its not because you ate lot of sweets as a child its because in most causes its due to obesity but that's definitely a source of confusion. People don't understand that there are several different types of diabetes and there are more than just two, there is also gestational diabetes during pregnancy but that Type 1 diabetes is definitely not due to obesity and the treatment is completely different than for Type 2 diabetes which is generally due to inactivity and overweight.
