Question: What kind of drinks are not helpful in controlling diabetes? Dr. Thaddeus Bell: A lot of people think that its okay to drink real fruit juice and diet sodas that those kinds of drinks will help control your sugar and will burn fat. There is no truth to that kind of information, in fact it is very new information that even diet sodas that a lot of diabetic patients drink will help better control your sugar but we now know that even diet sodas are not good for you when it comes to controlling you sugar. Another common misconception is okay to drink sweet tea if you have diabetes and I have to remind patients that sweet tea is not what you want to be drinking, least not as sweet as we have it in South Carolina, that's not the kind of sweet tea you want to be drinking in order to keep your sugar under control. Now I want you to make sure, I want to make sure you understand I am not saying that tea is bad for you, I am just saying that overly sweetened tea is not good for your diabetes or for your children.
