What is the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System? Dr. Curtis Worthington: The CyberKnife is actually the latest technology in the discipline known as Stereotactic Radiosurgery. What that is specifically is mode of treatment that's designed to use ionizing beams of radiation directed as a target, that target being an abnormal structure inside the brain or in other tissue. The CyberKnife allows you to send these X-ray beams at the abnormal area coming in from different angles. So that each beam is doing minimal or creating minimal energy through the tissue that passes, but where it concentrates are focuses in abnormal area, it creates a feel that will destroy the cells there as soon as they are by get rid of the abnormality. The CyberKnife is different from other mortalities that have come before it and that it uses a robotic arm that's computerized to help you deliver these X-ray beams. How important is CyberKnife technology in this field? Dr. Curtis Worthington: It's a big deal but you know it's not as a big deal for the patient as either radiation therapy or open surgery. People look at surgery with the great deal of anxiety and anesthesia and the discomfort and the recovery and all of that, with radiosurgery those things aren't an issue at all, it's all an outpatient procedures. It's completely painless, and it's very easy on the patient. So if it's an appropriate option for that patient and it isn't an appropriate option for everybody but when you got the right case, the right person, it's going to be much more desirable for them than almost anything else. Dr. Mary Decker: We always wish we can have this, but it wasn't possible. We didn't have these robotic arms to allow the precision, but more importantly we didn't have all the software to control the machine and to allow us to do all this complex calculations that the machine does to be able to self correct the movement of the patient and that's just a huge innovation.
