What are some signs and symptoms of a Yeast infection? T. Scott Jennings: Well actually these infections in women are primarily related to itching and discharge, I mean, they are fairly classic and they are fairly straightforward. Some of them, on the very first yeast infection, there will be really severe symptoms. I mean that's pretty rare though; there can be really just terrible pain and swelling essentially, but for most women it's just discharge and itching, very common and very non-specific symptoms, not all of these are actually yeast infections. The newer home detection devices are moderately effective at making an accurate diagnosis but they are not really terribly effective to be honest with you, doctors aren't terribly effective or it's not going to reason where they could try just because it's very difficult to truly say a yeast infection, unless you really do more sophisticated testing in many situations. I certainly think the home detection devices are certainly very reasonable as a first effort to see what is going on. Most of the antifungal devices available for women are extremely effective; there are some prescription tablets primarily that are moderately effective. I think the over the counter things are actually probably more effective for most of the actual yeast infections.
