Sherry Damatarca: At first glance, the fact that 33-year-old professional hockey player Rem Murray is back on the ice may not seem like a miracle. After all he played in the NHL for 8 years. But in 2004, at the peak of his career, he was forced to leave the game he loved because of a debilitating and painful neurological condition called cervical dystonia. Rem Murray: Yeah that was a difficult time. My chin was basically frozen to my left shoulder. I had no mobility to the right. I couldn't pour milk in my cereal. I found my retirement papers and I thought that was the end of my career. John J. Wald: There is a muscle in the front of the neck that may turn the head. Sherry Damatarca: Cervical dystonia which is often misdiagnosed, is the third most common movement disorder after Parkinson's disease and Tremor. John J. Wald: The condition caused the muscles in Rem's neck to contract so tightly, he couldn't lead a normal life. Luckily, he saw care quickly, had an accurate diagnosis, we were able to treat him with Botox and relaxed his overactive muscles. With this and some physical therapy Rem made an extraordinary recovery. Rem Murray: I have talked to several CD patients who have been misdiagnosed, ones who took 15 years to get proper diagnosis. So, I felt very fortunate to be surrounded with the right people and meet the right people that I was diagnosed immediately. Received the Botox injections and every time I received it, I felt better each time. Sherry Damatarca: The combination of physical therapy and Botox helped Murray make a truly impressive career come back. Making his way back to playing professional hockey. Rem Murray: I feel very fortunate to be associated with Dystonia Medical Research Foundation and I have to help raise awareness for this. I feel very fortunate to have my career back and most importantly my family life. Sherry Damatarca: Murray says, he is making goals of a different kind now, it's just as important as those on the ice. I am Sherry Damatarca.
