Kristi Awaits a Heart Transplant Kristi: Just out of the blue, and I started having tightness in the chest, I couldn’t breathe. Male: Because she had a fever and don’t feel good, she went to the -- and they gave her some medicine. Kristi: And they said it’s High Laryngitis, just treat it as is and it will run its course. It took five days for the virus to destroy my heart. It had destroyed my left side completely and my right side expanded to compensate so literally both sides of my heart were destroyed. I do have an external pump that assisting my heart. There’s a tube for each one of these that got literally goes into my body and connect up to my heart. Male: Her life has changed in every way I can imagine. The kids are fully aware of everything that’s been going on. They know that mom need a new heart. Kids: And she is going to get her heart back. Kid1: She’s going to get a new heart like this. Kristi: No child should have to grow up without their mother or their father. So my children keep me going.
