Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Dr. Travis Stork: And right now, we’re going to tackle -- one interviewer asked us to cover producethedoctor.com, Hudhud04 is 22 years old, says Irritable Bowel Syndrome has completely taking control of her life. And that’s not an understatement because IBS affects about 55 million people mostly females and that’s why April is Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Month. Dr. Lisa Masterson: Right, as so many women who are in practice who suffer from this, and it can cause bloating, it could really affect the person’s lives because it cause bloating, diarrhea where you’re running to the bathroom, you can’t work, constipation, mucus in your stool, it can really be a devastating situation for women. Dr. Travis Stork: Yeah, because both of those symptoms, you mentioned the diarrhea versus constipation, well, what happens when diarrhea, the fluids basically go in, and they come right out, everyone knows that, right? Dr. Lisa Masterson: You’ve got to go -- you’ve got to run to the bathroom. Dr. Travis Stork: Well, that’s not fun. But when you get constipated, literally, think of this as a plug, this is made of plug. Dr. Jim Sears: I can’t believe you’re constipating yourself there. Dr. Lisa Masterson: Yeah. Dr. Travis Stork: So everything you eat it gets stopped up and then everyone’s got that bloated, fumy -- Dr. Jim Sears: I hate that feeling. Dr. Lisa Masterson: Yeah. Dr. Travis Stork: Yeah, you know, it’s -- oh! Dr. Jim Sears: I would most rather have the diarrhea than the bloating --oh! Dr. Drew Ordon: Well, you fixed the constipation. Dr. Lisa Masterson: Yeah, now we’d be figuring -- Dr. Travis Stork: And this is maybe too graphic, but one of the treatments for constipation is, as physicians, we literally have to go and do a rectal exam and often times, remove a big plug of stool and then -- it’s just water, I promise. Dr. Drew Ordon: Goodness, I haven’t had to do that recently. Dr. Jim Sears: Yeah. Dr. Lisa Masterson: There you go. Dr. Travis Stork: High five! Dr. Jim Sears: No, just do these knuckles on that one. Dr. Travis Stork: So everybody is probably wondering why do I have all these foods up here. Well, there is certain sugars in certain individual, and sometimes stress can be trigger by symptoms, but certain foods -- spicy foods, cabbage, chocolates, coffee and of course, anyone who has IBS knows that it certain scenarios alcohol can trigger symptoms, as well as artificial sweeteners. Dr. Jim Sears: What are the three things that you can do to treat diabetes? Well here they are. First off, some foods -- beans, raspberries and artichokes. Artichokes are really rich in fiber and that’s one of the key things with treating IBS, make sure you’re getting enough fiber. Also drinking more water and eating yogurt with pro-biotics that helps keep your digestion normal. And then the last thing is actually peppermint oil and peppermint oil capsules. These are actually a cool thing. It helped -- part of the things with IBS is your spasm. This is an antispasmodic -- it helps relieve some of that pain and tension down there, so it’s a good treatment. Dr. Travis Stork: Important thing, if you have IBS, you’ve got to figure our what your triggers are and try to avoid those, add more of these good things in your life to prevent those symptoms.
