Professor John Lazarus MD FRCP FACE Professor Clinical Endocrinology Iodine is an essential building block for thyroid hormone and therefore and a pregnant woman needs somewhat more thyroid hormone a normal and so that’s why you need a little bit more thyroid nor iodine than normal because a pregnant woman has got to supply the fetus with iodine and thyroid hormone so it’s a vital constituent for the pregnant woman and for the thyroid gland.
