Dr. Stuart Reeves: I don’t know if you know, but in the West, our immune systems are now out of balance. Raena Morgan: I think a lot of people might know that. Dr. Stuart Reeves: If you compare us to rural Africa, when we’re young and when we’re growing up, we are not challenged by our environment. We live in a sterile society. We don’t eat dirt, we’re vaccinated against diseases, we shower every day, we don’t keep animals in the living room and this has led to an imbalance in our immune systems. This is why the rate of allergies has skyrocketed in the last 50 years and why the rate of childhood asthma has increased—all of these are indicators of an unbalanced immune system. We live clean lives, we wash all our food—we’re just not challenged with the sorts of things that our bodies naturally expect. People used to grow up in a rural atmosphere; with animals everywhere, dirt everywhere and their immune systems became fine tuned as they grew. And you can’t turn the immune system off. And if it can’t do what it’s supposed to do, it will do something else. Raena Morgan: Really? Like cause allergies. Dr. Stuart Reeves: Like cause allergies, asthma, all sorts of responses that it has no option but to do something. Raena Morgan: Well, thank you for clearing that up, Dr. Reeves. Dr. Stuart Reeves: My pleasure.
