Joe Harberg: When it comes to water conservation, most of us know to turn off the water when we are shaving, brushing our teeth or doing the dishes. But did you know 80-85% of energy used to wash clothes comes from heating the water? Warm or cool water gets your close just as clean, so avoid the hot setting to save money and energy. Reduce the temperature on your water heater. Lowering it just 2-3 degrees will save on your energy bill. Buy Energy Star appliances. On average, they are 20-30% more efficient. In 2006, the EPA estimated that the Energy Star program save $14 billion in energy cost nationwide. Look for the Energy Star label to make sure the new appliances you buy are as green as possible.
