I'm Elizabeth Goldenberg founder of Onespot Allergy. I have two sons and my younger son Jacob has severe food allergies. I have setup this video blog because I want to share tips parent to parent about living safely with food allergies. When Jacob’s allergy was diagnosed I was given a prescription for an EpiPen and the only advice I was given by my allergist was be careful. I then began to research food allergy on my own and all I could find were medical reports and food allergy awareness websites. There was nobody out there saying here you are with a food allergic child don’t worry here’s everything you need to keep this child safe at home and away from home. And it was for that reason that I setup my store OnespotAllergy.com. I want to share with you the key facts I have learned about food allergy. The first is that every food allergy should be considered severe because it could result in the life threatening condition called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can lead to brain damage or death. So to cope with this is important to avoid the food allergen completely even in trace amounts. The second thing I've learned about food allergy is that the first line of treatment is the drug epinephrine, which is available in an EpiPen or Twinject injector. If you haven’t been given a prescription for an EpiPen yet or you haven’t filled it you need to do so. A person with food allergy needs immediate access to medications at all times. The third key fact that I've gathered is that the best way to ensure immediate access to epinephrine is to wear it in a medication belt or holster on your body. People who receive their medication within 5 minutes of the start of a severe attack have the best outcomes. I don’t want you to worry. Now that you are informed about the seriousness of food allergy you can take the steps necessary to live safely with that allergy. I realized after several years of caring for Jacob that I felt very comfortable with his allergy because of the safety systems we had in place. I wanted to share the safety systems with other parents and that’s why I setup my store. In my next segments I'm going to share my allergy safety systems with you.
