Gynecomastia Surgery Mr. Khoo: If we talk about Gynecomastia as being man boobs but in fact Gynecomastia means woman boobs on a man, Gyneco as in gynecology and Mastia from breast. And in technical terms, Gynecomastia was said to occur when there’s a breast disc, a lump under the nipple that you can feel. More often it’s not just the nipple, that swelling of the beast tissue and quite often there’s a lot of surrounding fat. Gynecomastia can have such an effect on a man’s life that when he’s got to the stage where he’s struggling to live with the way things are, he really needs to understand that there is a surgical solution. There is an operation which can help him. Host: In America, breast reduction surgery is now the fourth most popular cosmetic procedure for men. Dr. Delgado: The pressure on men to look good is huge. You’ve looked in the newspaper, in magazines, clothes, hair, gels, males, you can all exercise dieting and all these things are about people looking good and feeling good about themselves. Host: In a country where men strive her physical perfection, having breasts can have a devastating effect on a man’s body image. Alex Gonzales is so inhibited by his breasts that he has never undressed infront of another person and a lot in a woman. And at 30 years old, he’s still a virgin. Alex: It’s funny because that only came out 40-year-old version. I said, “Gosh, it’s going to be two more years—is going to be just dedicated for me and it’s sad. I've had three or four girlfriends that I consider my girlfriends but I've never been intimate with them. And before it goes to that step, I end it. Host: No one has ever seen them and it took days for him to psyche himself up to show us his chest. Alex: Even myself, I get embarrassed taking off my shirt. When I'm by myself, I can go to the bathroom and just look at my face, I won’t look at my chest, just to block it out. My life is not going anywhere unless I correct my condition. That’s how I feel right now emotionally. Host: Ales has made the decision to have surgery and he’s flying to the west coast to see his specialist in male breast reduction. Alex: Hopefully this is going to be for the good. I'm just being very positive because I think it’s the best thing to do to just be positive by it and it will come out okay. Host: He is going alone. Having told his friends and family, he’s on a university trip. Alex is hoping the surgery will give him the confidence to leave his lies and secrets behind. Alex has chosen a specialist in San Francisco. Dr. Delgado treated nearly a hundred men last year. Dr. Delgado: It’s going up every year without question. It is going up every year. And our culture is very hard on then for having enlarged chest. It’s very accepting for men to have a large gut, I mean no one even thinks about it but as soon as it comes to their chest, it changes completely. Host: First, Dr. Delgado examines Alex’s chest. Dr. Delgado: Now, the first thing is great, you have nice packs which is really good. You have fairly good quality skin. And so all this is the tissue that we’ve talked about. Host: It’s the first time anyone has ever touched Alex’s breasts. Dr. Delgado uses pictures so he can compare Alex to other cases and show him the options available. Dr. Delgado: You can see the protrusion of the nipple and what’s poking that nipple is that hard gland there. And so afterwards we’ve got a nice— Alex: So, the gland is right underneath the nipple. Dr. Delgado: Yeah, that’s the center of the gland. This is what I called the smooth—from when you do a liposuction only. He’s had it done twice and so that gland is just kind of like hanging down. So, after the gland is taken out, then we get a much more contour and contraction there. A patient like this, I know he’s going to have loose areola that kind of stretch. And this is a case where one would do a secondary procedure on them but I tell them that upfront because I know there is no way that this is going to shrink ba
