Speaker: Are there healthy substitutes for refined sugar? Jeannette Bessinger: Definitely, there are natural farms of sugar that can work just as well as table sugar, but they have different properties and they are look at lower glycemic index or they have more nutrients. My favorite one for one is probably dates sugar, which is really comes from crushed and pulverized dates has a lot of micro nutrients in it. It doesn't dissolve as well as regular sugar so it doesn't work as well for sauce and things like that, but it's terrific in baking. Number two for me is probably a agave nectar. A agave nectar is a lower glycemic load, liquid sweetener similar to the consistency in color of honey that can be used in baking wonderfully. Raw honey is another terrific sweetener and two other once that are used commonly are whole unrefined maple syrup and a rice syrup or barely malt.
