Hi everybody! I'm Melanie Raposo and welcome to Mommy's Minute. If you are pregnant or trying, you've probably heard of folic acid, found in super green, citrus juices and enriched or whole grains. Folic acid prevents neural tube defects in your developing baby and reduces the risk of spinal and brain defects by up to 70%. It's important for women to take folic acid even before they conceive. In fact because 50% of pregnancies are unplanned, all women of child bearing age, make sure they get enough folic acid in their diet. Women should consume about 400 micrograms daily before conception and about 800 micrograms during pregnancy. So make sure you eat your greens and whole grains and renutrient labels to make sure you are getting enough.
