EmpowHer Asks: What would you say to a woman, who tells you she found a lump in her self exam, but her doctor said there’s nothing to worry about? Dr. Gail Lebovic Director of Women’s Services for Cooper Clinic. We use to see a lot of breast cancer that was actually found by a woman herself by finding a lump. Nowadays, 50% of cancers are found on a mammogram which is great because that means you can’t even feel it but if a woman feels a lump it’s definitely important for her to get that checked out by a doctor as soon as possible. If the doctor— like say, “Don’t worry about it?” I wouldn’t necessarily stop there. I would probably get the opinion of perhaps a breast specialist and that can become very important because perhaps other tests like an ultrasound would be helpful in determining whether that woman needs a biopsy.
