Speaker: What are trans fatty acids? Jeannette Bessinger: Trans fatty acids also known as trans fats or an altered form of vegetable oil. They where design in the first place to prolong the shelf life of food. So if they take a -- they start with the liquid vegetable oil, they heat it to very high temperatures and they insert hydrogen to change the cells molecular structure so they end up with a salt. There is not beneficial use in your body there is no need unlike with natural fat, there is no need for this in your body and it may be linked with coronary heart disease you should need them.
