Host: What are the most common mistakes made regarding eye protection from the sun? Dr. Laura D. Cook: I think the most common mistake is not having enough protection and so no matter what, you want to make sure that you are adequately protected. First of all, sunglasses, I think are very important and you want to be sure that you look and that they are labeled and all sunglasses that are approved should be labeled, that's to say that they are 100% or 99-100% UVA and UVB protected. Second of all, even if you have sunglasses, you need to have some kind of brimmed hat to protect the skin around your eyes from skin cancer or from the sun's rays that can then induce the skin cancer and then lastly, even if you have some other type of UV protection in your spectacle, in your clear glass spectacles or in your contact lenses, it doesn't take away the need for the brimmed hat and the sunglasses.
