There are lots of things that can help heal a woman’s heart. We give women Aspirin after their heart attacks to prevent a second heart attack. If you’re a woman and you’ve had a stent placed, you may also be put on another blood thinner called Plavix or Clopidogrel, cholesterol-lowering medicine not only to lower your cholesterol but to prevent a second heart attack, and the medicines that have been studied and show that they do reduce a second heart attack in both men and women are those called statins, commonly used cholesterol medicines. If you had a heart attack, one of the other medicines we use that can prevent a second heart attack and also lower blood pressure is a beta-blocker. It's best used to lower the risk for a second heart attack. It's not used as commonly as a sole agent to lower blood pressure, and another medicine that we use for blood pressure and also in people who have had heart attacks, to prevent heart failure, is an ACE inhibitor. It seems like a cocktail of medicines and, but those are the ones that have been studied to lower risk for heart attack, a second heart attack. The goal is, if you had one, you want to prevent a second one, but, medicines are not the only answer. One important thing that all women should know is that they’ll be eligible for cardiac rehabilitation which is an organized program of exercise training, nutritional counseling, and stress management that’s covered by insurance. Believe it or not, ladies, if you’re a woman who has had a heart attack, you are less likely than a man to get referred to cardiac rehab. All you need to do is have your doctor refer you.
