Host: What is echo expansion? Dr. Rene Hackney: Echo expansion in building early vocabulary is repeating the child's word in context but adding more. So for a young child who has got a few words and they come up and they say, "juice," the parent says, "oh, more juice." They're still using juice in context, but they're adding to it, or "more juice, please", giving them back a fuller sentence. It is modeling to the child longer language and saying the expectation is that we'll add a few words here.
