Dr. Lori Carrillo on Working as an Obstetrician I think one of the most gratifying aspects of my job as a women’s health specialist, specifically an obstetrician, is being present for the evolution of a couple becoming a family. It’s difficult to pinpoint one success story because they occur every week literally. With the birth of each baby I get asked every day, “How many babies have you delivered?” And I say, “I don’t know.” Well don’t you count? No, I only count yours because that’s the one that’s most important to me right now. And for some patients like they understand my philosophy and others kind of think maybe not, but I really appreciate practicing in a country and in a community where if we do it right we are going to have a successful pregnancy because we have the resources. And it’s why I chose to practice at a major medical center versus perhaps one of the smaller hospitals in the valley because here at Banner Desert I know that if something unexpected happens with one of my patients and one of my babies, I am already where I need to be. I have had patients who have come to me having delivered at other hospitals, maybe unexpectedly with a complication, unexpectedly delivering a little early and having to then by transported to a major medical center, or having one of their babies transported after delivery to Banner Desert for a higher level of care. And the success story for me is knowing that there is no transfer and there is no separation between my momma and her baby.
