Male Speaker: Does surgery really make a difference? Dr. William McCarthy: Surgery makes a tremendous difference. We're starting to see diseases that are caused by obesity actually reversed and most of the time at least improved with bariatric surgery. We see patients with diabetes that get off their medication, same goes for hypertension that also can treat sleep apnea and a number of the problems that we've talked about as far as being complications of obesity. And as far as weight loss, we can see with the Lap-Band for example about 50% of the excess body weight and with more aggressive surgery such as the malabsorptive procedures, 70% or more of the excess body weight can be lost. So, bariatric surgery definitely has a role in the treatment of obesity.
