Digital Mammography's Effectiveness in Locating Breast Abnormalities There have been large studies, you know, in 50,000 women or so comparing digital mammography to film screen mammography, and what they found was that overall there was no difference in cancer detection between the two types of mammography. However, in one study that was published in the “New England Journal of Medicine” a couple of years ago, they did find that in the subgroup of women who have extremely dense breasts or who are under the age of 50 or pre-menopausal, there was a slight advantage for the patients undergoing digital mammography.
