Different Types of Thyroid Cancer There’s four main types of thyroid cancer; there are two that are really good and luckily, by far the most common, and that’s papillary and follicular. And then there’s one that’s not as good; it’s called medullary, and then there’s one that’s really bad and luckily it’s very uncommon, what is called anaplastic thyroid cancer, and that’s what Supreme Court Justice Rehnquist had several years ago, and that’s a very fast-growing tumor that’s essentially uniformly fatal. But luckily again, most of the cancer is papillary; the second most common is follicular, and those are what we call well-differentiating cancers which simply means that they behave very well.
