Pamela Mazza: It's the long-term complications that we worry about. Untreated diabetes over time can cause blindness which is totally preventable if called early and treated early. By the time someone is diagnosed with diabetes, we know that they are four times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke so taking care of that, treating that and all the other risk factors that they can possibly have this really important. Kidney disease is another complication that diabetes and then also having diabetes uncontrolled diabetes can put you at a risk for infections and subsequent amputations. About 50% of non-traumatic amputations in the United States today are from uncontrolled diabetes and infections.
