Dr. Travis Stork: We’re wrapping up a full year of Medical News and Prevention Tips that you need to know. November is American Diabetes month. Every year, more than one and a half million individuals are diagnosed with diabetes alone in the U.S. Diabetes simply affects your body’s ability to control blood sugar, leads to many dangerous complications we’ve covered before in the show. Too many types, type I, cursing kids and their bodies don’t produce insulin. Type 2, more common in adults, you produce insulin but your body doesn’t know how to process it or it doesn’t recognize the insulin. That’s where it leads to so many complications. It’s becoming an epidemic of huge proportions. Dr. Drew Ordon: And the CDC tells us that 95% of cases of diabetes are type 2. This is the type of diabetes you can prevent. What do you do? Eat right, watch your diet, exercise, control your blood pressure, you can prevent your diabetes from starting. Dr. Travis Stork: One of the treatments for diabetes is you need insulin to get that sugar to go into your cells or reduce the amount in your blood because that high blood sugar levels is what cause the complications. This is called the QuickPen and this is a new pen that has injectable insulin. There are 300 units. So, a patient may go through five of these a month but something you can keep in your pocket or in your purse and they say the needle is as thin as an eyelash. These are disposable and of course, the whole idea of diabetes is the way to prevent complications is to treat; treat it aggressively because if you keep your blood sugars at a normal level, you avoid the complications. The more treatments we have like the QuickPen and others that are on the rise, the better off we’ll all be.
