Kathy Reily: Hello! I am Kathy Reily, Coordinator of the Diabetes Program at Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Virginia, and now we're going to talk about exercise in diabetes. Male Speaker: Why is exercise important to people with diabetes? Kathy Reily: Exercise is important in the management of diabetes because one of the main effects of exercise is that it helps to lower blood sugar. With exercise, the sugar is forced out of the bloodstream and into the muscle cells that are actually working or exercising. This is something that is very important we call exercise the optional medication; it is something that most people with diabetes can use to help lower and manage their blood sugar.
