Dr. Susan Sharma: This is insidermedicine in 60. From Halifax, an alternative test may be better than the traditional V/Q scan at detecting blood clots in the lung. Researchers compared computed tomographic pulmonary angiography to the traditional V/Q scans and showed that the newer test was more sensitive at detecting clots. The test also had a similar false negative rate. From Minneapolis, when someone has an acute heart attack, prompt recognition and intervention can lower mortality. Many heart programs now let emergency doctors make the decision to cath a patient instead of a heart specialist. In a study of over 1300 patients with acute ST elevated heart attacks, 14% did not have a clear culprit and 10% did not have coronary artery disease. And finally, from San Antonio, men whose mother, sisters or daughters have breast cancer may be at risk for both prostate and breast cancer. Males who test positive for a gene linked to breast cancer called BRCA2 have a 14% lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer and a 6 % lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. For insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.
