Audra Lowe: Men have been doing it for years-dating younger women, but now it is the ladies or the cougars, as they are called were finding fun with younger men. Rhiannon spoke with one author who is debunking some popular cougar myths. Rhiannon Ally: Getting mold by a cougar may not necessarily be a bad thing, but are they really are out in the prowl? Well not there says they’re getting a bad rep so we’re learning the truth about cougars. Mrs. Robinson you are trying to seduce him. It may started with Mrs. Robinson but our new generation of cougars have graduated passed that stereotyped. Linda Franklin: That’s the old version, that’s the old meaning of a cougar. That she was a lonely, desperate woman over 40, out stalking for young guys in bars. Rhiannon Ally: From Demi and Ashton to Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon more and more women are dating much younger men. Author Linda Franklin wrote, the real cougar handbook don’t ever call me ma’am. She wants to set the record straight on cougar stereo-types. She says, the first myth, cougars are out on the prowl. Linda Franklin: That is so ridiculous that I can’t even believe that people are buying into it. Cougar women are fabulous. They are sexy. They are independent. They are smart. Men are after them in numbers like you wouldn’t believe. Rhiannon Ally: Linda says there are numbers of reasons younger guys are attracted to older women. Most cougars don’t play games and many of them already had kids. So they’re not ruled by a biological clock, but that doesn’t mean cougars hate commitment. Myth number two, cougars don’t want lasting relationships. Linda Franklin: Women love relationships. They love the emotion. Cougars want lasting relationships. They are not really looking for that one night stand. They’ve been there, done that and it didn’t worked and so they’re looking for something that that’s much more meaningful. Rhiannon Ally: And more meaningful does not mean more money. Linda says regardless of how much money a cougar has most are not looking to take care of a man. The third myth is cougars are sugar mamas. Linda Franklin: We have worked tired for our money and we know the importance of being financially independent. And we’re not about just want or something. We have worked really hard for a pair of wash board abs and a pretty smile. Rhiannon Ally: On again off again cougar couples Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer have stayed on the headlines, but whether celebrities or dating younger man or not Linda says, the fourth myth is cougars are just the passing pad. Linda Franklin: Women and men of different ages have been attracted to each other for all our time, and I don’t think it’s about to change soon. So if she feels like she’s 30 on the inside she’s going to want to choose a younger guy and just the same reasons that the younger guy they are attracted to the older women. The older women are attracted to the young guys for their energy and excitement about life. Rhiannon Ally: Which brings out to our last myth, cougars are sex starved cradle robbers, and bankrupts famous character seduced Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate and well the message on the screen was clear. Linda says it’s not a label for today’s real cougars. Linda Franklin: What kind of woman would ever want to attached herself to the cougar label if that what’s stands for, and she knows what she wants? She stopped listening to what other people tell her that she needs to be doing. She refuses to be defined by the age of the man that she chooses to be with.
