Comprehensive Weight Management Program and Bariatric Surgery Hi, I am Sunil Bhoyrul. I am a bariatric surgeon at Alvarado Hospital. I also run La Jolla Weight Management. We serve San Diego and North County, and our mission is to provide comprehensive care to our patients who suffer from the clinical illness of morbid obesity. I am a bariatric surgeon and what we do is weight loss surgery. About 80 percent of our patients get the LAP-BAND operation, about almost 20 percent of them get the gastric bypass, and some patients will even get a band over bypass. And a lot of focus obviously, I am a surgeon, a lot of focus is on the technical aspects of what we do. But our philosophy and what we really believe is that surgery itself is pretty ineffective unless it’s part of a comprehensive weight management program. And therefore what we do in my practice and with the people I surround myself with, is that we make sure that our patients get surgery but they get it in the context of paying a lot of attention to their food choices before and after surgery, to their ability to exercise once again before and after surgery. And last but by no means least, the ability to manage those inevitable stresses of life that could, down the road, defeat the surgery. So again, it’s surgery but in the context of dietary, lifestyle, physical activity and stress management.
