Comparing Lap Band Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery The LAP-BAND system is the least invasive of all the bariatric surgeries that we do. Our patients will typically have surgery that takes about an hour, they will go home, sometimes within two hours of surgery. So that’s very exciting and people have thought a bit about it as minimal access surgery, as minimally invasive surgery, and sometimes people think about it in the same context as they might think of cosmetic surgery. However, what distinguishes the LAP-BAND from cosmetic surgery is that what we are really here to do isn’t just to get people to lose weight but more importantly we are here to take away the illnesses, the co-morbidities that are associated with people who suffer from obesity. Diabetes, 75% of the diabetics will get better or will get complete resolution from LAP-BAND surgery. Sleep apnea, hypertension, joint disease, depression, cholesterol, the list is almost endless. In fact if a disease is caused by suffering from morbid obesity then we should, at the very least, be able to stop it from getting worse, to halt the progression of the co-morbidity or in the best case scenario reverse it completely. So the LAP-BAND, in fact the main aim of the LAP-BAND is to halt the progression and to reverse the co-morbidities associated with suffering from obesity.
