Aurelia Spurlark: Well, this is the Pre-kindergarten program at the North Kenwood Oakland charter School. The Charter School is a public school with the private sponsorship, the children come for half a day and a lot of their times spend in social interaction learning limits, but often learning how to interact socially with each other using words to express feelings and how to get along. Mearl Sledge: I think it's important to start children at a young age into school, so they learn how to interact kind of get along with the other people. Angela Moody: The really the interaction with kids is what I really like it's he learning at school. Aurelia Spurlark: Some children have never been separated for the parents, so for some children there is a period of learning to be separated and learning to be comfortable away from them, and learning to trust that they are not going to be left here that, that they will be picked up. So, in the beginning of the school year, you had many, many tears and I think the parens as well as the children work through their anxieties about leaving their child to some place that is not familiar to them and for the child about being away from their parents. During a conflict were we're beginning to work with the program where they learn how to use words, how to look at each other directly say their names, say what they didn't like and what they want that person to do, so that they begin to advocate for themselves when somebody pushes them or something like that. And so that other people become aware that their actions can cause a consequence, that can hurt someone.
