Dr. T. Karl Byrne, explains that weight loss surgery is not a guaranteed "fix" for a food addiction, he also explains bariatric procedures are simply a tool that patients use to help them get their weight under control.

The incidence of recidivism is about 15% people can follow—and you know after many years start putting the weight back on again for one of these procedures. So, we tell the patients, “We are going to give you the tool, you have to use the tool and everyday you get up, you have to understand that you’ve got a real problem with food intake.” It’s an addiction just like alcohol addiction or cigarette addiction. But you have a tool to take care of. You have to use it. If you lose sight of that, then you can start putting your weight back on again or if you stop exercise you’re going to eat the wrong types of food and so on. Absolutely and everybody gets evaluated by the psychologist to see if we think there will be complaint, to see if they have the mental capacity to be able to understand what’s necessary for them to be successful and also you know that the mental and psychological well being to carry this though to its final course.
