Can Late Night Eating Cause Weight Gain Dr. Travis Stork: It’s time for our popular Prevention magazine Health Hearsay. Today’s question is this, “Does eating after 9PM -- Liz, factor fiction -- cause weight gain?” Liz Vaccariello: It can but not because your metabolism suddenly changes after 9 o’clock. Dr. Travis Stork: So, all these rules—don’t eat after the specific time. Liz Vaccariello: No. It’s about how many calories you eat over the course of the day and what happens is a lot people eat more calories than they need to at night because they were eating for reasons other than hunger. They’re eating because they’re bored or because they’re stressed. But one of the tips is to drink before you eat. If you feel the urge to get up and go to the kitchen, have a glass of water because often, the body mistakes thirst for hunger. Dr. Travis Stork: Because a lot of it is 9PM and later, 8PM later, people are reaching for cookies, chips. Those are not good late night foods because if you fill yourself with these before you go to bed, you may wake up in the morning and you’re not hungry for breakfast. Liz Vaccariello: Right. It’s the most important meal of the day and people -- if you don’t eat breakfast, you think you’re going to eat less throughout the day but studies have shown that you actually eat more. So, having a nice meal in the morning actually boosts your metabolism. Another tip is I often rinse my mouth out with mouthwash or brush my teeth to signal to the mouth and the body and the mind that eating is over for the day. Dr. Travis Stork: So, it’s really not when you’re eating, it’s what you’re eating. Liz Vaccariello: Yeah. Dr. Travis Stork: Thank you so much for clearing that up with this. Now, you can find out more information on Health Hearsays in Prevention magazine. Coming up, I’ve got a couple more very important weight loss secrets for you. My Doctor’s Orders are coming up
