Probably, you were either talking to someone, watching tv, pondering over your to-do list or maybe even driving! Most experts agree that a common reason why we overeat and gain weight is because we are distracted by other things while eating. A discipline, from Buddhist monks, called mindful eating is emerging in the US as a way to practice better eating habits. Mindful eating is an approach for re-establishing our connection with food. There are many aspects to it but the basic principle is for us to slow down while eating, use all our senses and appreciate what we are eating. Dr. Lilian Cheung, a Harvard nutritionist and a co-author of the book Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life, suggests that such a practice can lead to better weight control. There are buddhist centers around the US where you can go and participate in mindful eating workshops. Attendees describe the sessions as eye-opening. Imagine eating slowly - after a bite you put your fork down and use your sense of touch, smell, sight, taste, and hearing AND no talking. It is harder to practice than it sounds but those who experience it, claim they enjoy the food much more and eat to the extent it's required.
