Raena Morgan: A simple question: what is the best exercise for diabetics? Dr. Frank Murray: I would say walking. Raena Morgan: Walking. Dr. Frank Murray: You don't have to buy any expensive clothes or shoes. Put on your old shoes, your old clothes and just go out and walk. It's wonderful for losing weight and it's been shown that people who exercise who walk say for thirty minutes day, you know, can lose their weight and perhaps reduce their diabetes, or eliminated it altogether. Raena Morgan: So any of exercise is good for diabetics. Dr. Frank Murray: Oh, yes. Raena Morgan: How does it impact on their disease? Dr. Frank Murray: Well, swimming also is important. Well, if you're losing weight and, as we know, obesity is a major problem for diabetics. So if you walking or swimming, less impact exercises, don't jog. That's the worst. But it's no longer in favor really. People run. Running is fine. You're sort of skipping along on your toes and there's not that much stress. When you're jogging, can you imagine what it's doing all on the blood and how you're hitting the pavement? That's not good for you. But running is very good and swimming. But walking is, I would say, the preferred. Raena Morgan: Does the exercise have an impact on blood sugar? Dr. Frank Murray: Yes. It reduces obviously if you're exercising, you're churning up all the body parts, you know, the blood is flowing better. So, exercises and has a lot of ways of helping you, but mainly in losing weight, that's the main thing. Raena Morgan: Well, now there are interactive games that you can punch and things. Dr. Frank Murray: Yes. It's excellent, excellent. As I say, you don't need any, have to buy the expensive clothing or tennis racquets or whatever just go out and walk, you know. It's fabulous exercise. Raena Morgan: Thank you, Frank. Dr. Frank Murray: Thank you.
