What’s all the buzz about vitamin D? Dr. Ann Kulze: I keep saying that I have a D in my bonnet, a D in my bonnet. There has a many explosion of new science over the last three years, telling us loud and clear that number one, waste of deficiency of vitamin D in American really in all parts of world are absolutely epidemic and that vitamin D is not just about bone health. We know that vitamin D has a profound and relevant effect in all parts of the body, it interacts with over a thousand different genes and vitamin D is involve in cancer protection, your muscular function, immunity, protection from auto immune conditions and cardiovascular health. So this is a huge deal, so many people are deficient and scientist are studying this new story of vitamin D with the zeal and you know vigor of the potential block buster drug. And I will tell you is the current studies are confirm are the result that we’re saying from the studies of the last few years I confirm and subsequent studies. In my professional life I have not experience a more, a quicker, simpler, less expensive weight to transform public health than to get everyone’s vitamin D levels up to the optimal range. Now, interest thing about vitamin D, guess what? You largely get it from sun exposure our hunter gather ancestors and they live like outdoors and they didn’t wear a lot of cloths and they don’t use any sunscreen while you know we live in doors we have the clothe we are in the sunscreen because the apparent of that skin cancer but unfortunately all those signs block production of vitamin D in the skin. And vitamin D is really not available in food with the exception of oily fish which are the only food they have it natively. Oily fish like salmon and tuna and sardines they are at thankfully for to find more and more foods with it dairy products within 45 for a years or decades milk but they are adding enough of juice into cereals and this is great for consumers but I recommend that all adults supplement with vitamin D to not take a chance that you would ever be deficient and such an important nutrient is so vital for you know broad spectrum health protection. The way you want a supplement is with vitamin D3, the D3 form is much more buy available than the other form of the D2 form that you may also find on the shelves and you need to consider the amount of vitamin D that is in other supplements that you take because it is typically kind of multivitamins, it’s a commonly fun in combination with calcium supplements. So, look at your supplements that you want a total daily dose around the thousand IU’s, you can safely take up to 2000 IU’s and it’s very good evidence than may even bump that way up base on studies that are coming out. If you are have a medical issue, if you keep prescription drugs you are pregnant or nursing place talk to your healthcare provider however before you take any form of supplements including vitamin D.
