Baby GERD Treatment - Thickened Feeding Male: Sometimes it’s thought as put right cereal or of its form it’s thickened. Does that help reflux? Dr. Susan Schulman: If a baby is formula fed, sometimes thickening the feedings makes them spit a little less. Some parents like doing it and I think that the gastroenterologist tell me that one of the reasons that helps is that the baby gets satisfied with fewer ounces and the stomach doesn’t get distended quite as much and that sometimes helps with spitting. Male: It’s like keeping it in the stomach and staying full off the brain says you’re full or maybe a little bit less? Dr. Susan Schulman: Yes, you’re full and the three and a half ounces, maybe enough instead of four because you gain extra calories by the cereal, so the baby perceives that the feeding is over sooner.
