What do you say to a woman who is scared to see a spine doctor for her back pain? Dr. Raiszadeh: The key is knowledge is power. The more knowledge you have with the spine the better you are and the more opinions you get the better. It doesn’t serve very many purposes to not know what’s going on. If you can know what alternatives you have, you have a ton of alternatives before ever thinking of surgery. So don’t think that by seeing a certain specialist that automatically makes you have to go down a certain path. It’s still your choice, and most spine conditions their treatment is a quality-of-life decision. You always have a decision, including having surgery, as to whether I can live with this condition or whether I want to have something done with it. So it’s best to get multiple opinions even if you have been told you absolutely need surgery. Wait, hold off, get more opinions. See what other options you have.
