Jennifer Mathews: Acupuncture has been around for centuries. Dr. Steve Amoils: You treat the current symptoms. You treat the symptoms that have happened in the past, and you prevent symptoms from happening in the future. Jennifer Mathews: Today, Family Physician Steve Amoils is working to relieve numbness, tingling and back pain for Jim Leonard. Dr. Jim Leonard: I was kind of up against it and I didn't possibly having to go see a neurosurgeon. Jennifer Mathews: After one treatment, Jim found relief. Once a skeptic of alternative treatments, this former orthopedic surgeon gave up his practice and now works with Dr. Amoils using acupuncture. Dr. Jim Leonard: Instead of working in the operating room all day on Tuesday, I would operate until about 12:00, and I'd go to his office at 1:00 or 1:30 and I'd work with him on Tuesday afternoon. Jennifer Mathews: Dr. Leonard believes acupuncture may be one of few treatments to help fibromyalgia. Samantha Platt tried more than a dozen medications and countless other remedies, but with no relief. Samantha Platt: At the worst, it's been to the point where I couldn't even get out of bed. I had tried many other things, and this was kind of the last thing on my list to try and get some relief. Jennifer Mathews: In a Swiss study of 70 patients, 75 percent showed improvement in their disease. Dr. Jim Leonard: It's the only thing that I've found to be helpful with fibromyalgia. Samantha Platt: It's been really an amazing difference. Jennifer Mathews: She says her pain used to be at a 10 everyday. Now, it's nearly gone and she's back to normal activities. This is Jennifer Mathews reporting.
