Jennifer Matthews: If child birth is a pain most women never forget, what was different for Lorinda Gamson? She says it's a pain she never knew. Lorinda Gamson: I was so relaxed, my husband didn't even really know when I was having a contraction. Jennifer Matthews: When Lorinda became pregnant with Noah, she knew she wanted a natural childbirth. Lorinda Gamson: I certainly believed in the power of my mind and the power of my body. Jennifer Matthews: She used an alternative method of birthing known as hypnobirthing. Dee Pullen: Other methods teach you to deal with pain. We teach you that there doesn't have to be pain. Jennifer Matthews: Hypnobirthing Specialist Dee Pullen says the goal is to remove the idea that childbirth has to be stressful and instead allow the body to perform a natural process. Dee Pullen: When we take away that stress, then Mom relaxes completely, the muscles do not fight with each other and they relax completely and let the baby out. Jennifer Matthews: Through four weekly sessions, women learn how to put themselves in a relaxed state. When the big day comes, they return to that state. Obstetrician Craig DeFrees is skeptical. Dr. Craig DeFreese: Different things work for different people and I don't think that anybody would suggest that it would be the answer for everybody but there would be a group of people that it would be helpful for. Jennifer Matthews: Lorinda admits she was somewhat unsure herself. But then Lorinda Gamson: I remember looking at Dee and saying, 'I can't believe how easy that was.' Jennifer Matthews: And whether there's a connection or not, she says Noah seems to be pretty relaxed himself. This is Jennifer Matthews reporting.
