Medical Specialist: Neonatal-perinatal Medicine

After completion of medical school, the pediatrician completes another three years of training and must pass an examination to be Board Certified in Pediatrics. After a pediatrician specializing in neonatal-perinatal medicine completes an additional 12 -24 months of training in a fellowship program, he or she assumes the role of primary care provider for sick newborns. The neonatologist coordinates with obstetrical colleagues to plan for the care of mothers who have high-risk pregnancies and their babies.
